There are many opinions out there about what counseling is. There can be much stigma surrounding it. In particular, Christians can be one of the most unaccepting communities regarding therapy. Admitting you may need help is not a lack of faith but a maturity to know you need help. God has given us the church to rely on one another to build up each other (1 Thessalonians 5:11).

Something I’ve come to realize is that Christian principles already exist in counseling. Forgiveness, love, compassion, and mercy are in therapy and, more importantly, in the word of God (Galatians 5:22-3). The Bible itself speaks a lot about healthy relationships. (1 Peter 3:7).

One of the gifts of the Holy Spirit is counseling, so we shouldn’t shy away when we need help (Romans 12:6-8). Counseling is not a thing to be ashamed of but something to embrace. I am in my third year of Graduate work and did my clinical training at the Christian Counseling Center in Norwalk, CT. I am also a certified Prepare/ Enrich Facilitator, a faith-based process. Using Prepare/ Enrich as a base and combining it with my clinical training, we will efficiently and effectively work through anything.

Unique Christian Counseling

What makes our Christian counseling in Springfield, Mo, different is the overt use of the name of Jesus and the presence of the Holy Spirit during our work. Integrating faith-based elements has been very easy in my time working in this field.

While in Christian therapy with me, you will be given scientifically-based therapeutic approaches, and I will incorporate the word of scripture to back it up. We won’t shy away from prayer, asking God for his help for growth and development. Being a Christian means letting God in all areas of your life, not just during Sunday church.

The Bible has a lot to say about Christian couples. It knows intimately how men want to be respected and how women want to be loved (Ephesians 5:33). With the biblical foundation, you will see how a marriage with Christ at the center is healthy and spiritually impactful. You will see how modern therapeutic interventions align with biblical principles to achieve your desired relationship.

Strategies We Will Use

  • Placing Christ at the center, we will make a life plan and develop goals for you to achieve.

  • Incorporating prayer, we will invite Jesus into all aspects of your marriage.

  • Using Psychoeducation, you will learn how your relationship can be and is a significant part of your Christian practice

  • Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy: The therapist will work with the couple/clients to examine and challenge poor thought patterns and unhealthy behaviors. Then, the therapist and clients will seek to supplant those thoughts and behaviors with healthier ones.

  • Structural Family Therapy: The therapist will examine the structure of relationships and identify how they function. The couple/client and therapist will analyze partner roles, power dynamics, proper boundaries, and more to re-orient relationships to a healthier state.

  • Contextual Therapy: As the name suggests, this type of therapy looks at how people grew up in the context of their families, and it seeks to find trauma expressing itself in current relationships.

  • Eric will use these techniques in sequence as clients' needs call for them. If necessary, we will begin at the surface level with cognitive behavioral and move deeper to trauma with contextual therapy. Again, all is dependent on the couple's/ client's needs.
